About Health Help International and our Christian Aid work abroad

Health Help International was founded in 1999 in response to an appeal from a hospital in Zambia which had no doctor.

It is registered with the charity commission, number 1078353. It seeks to help the less fortunate, young and old in those parts of the world where poverty and local conditions adversely affect them.

Our Mission

Is to obey God's command to love our neighbour as ourselves, to heal the sick and care for the weak and poor of this world.

We seek to do this by providing money for hospital and clinic infrastructure, by supplying medical equipment and funding medical aid to those unable to afford hospitalisation or treatment in Zambia and India. Self-help we consider is important for the dignity of the recipients, and where possible we ensure that this plays a part.

Chinamma is one of the destitute and mentally disabled women living in the little hospice being run by Pastor Sam in Trivandrum, South India. A HHI success story - Chinamma

She was living rough in the city, begging from nearby houses and washing in a pond. Pastor Sam brought her to his home to stay with he and his wife, Valsala and two teenage daughters. She believes she is still living in Bangalore and sees Sam and his family as her relatives - she calls Sam 'Daddy'. It is obvious she is from a Christian family and went to Sunday School for she loves to entertain visitors by singing Christian songs, her favourite being 'I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me' and she has it right, for although shunned by society, Jesus loves even such as she. During her rational periods, Sam has discovered that when her mental problems developed, her husband left her and relatives turned her out. Travelling by train and bus without any tickets she travelled from place to place and eventually was thrown out at Trivandrum by the ticket inspector.
Chinamma has an engaging personality and is helpful in the kitchen and around the hospice but she is concerned about food and things being on time - if a meal is late her character changes and she may rush out and inform the neighbourhood that they are not getting food at the hospice.
She is one of the 30 mentally disabled destitutes now being lovingly cared for by Sam and his family.

Health Help International helps maintain the Mission at Trivandrum by monthly financial contributions.

Siambango is a special little girl who lives with her family in the Nchete compound in Monze, Zambia. A HHI success story - Siambango

Most ordinary people live in the compounds around Monze and they are busy, congested housing estates which resemble campsites. The homes are small, single storied with tin roofs and there is much evidence of everyday living; washing on trees, bare-footed boys playing football and babies being bathed in plastic bowls.    Siambango is 8 years old and has cerebral palsy. She lives with her mother, Nzala, and 4 brothers in what seemed to be half a home, neatly painted blue with a small stall of tomatoes outside the porch. Jute Williams, from HHI (UK) visited her house recently just after Siambango had had a bath and had been placed outside on a thin piece of cloth on the porch to meet her and Jute remarked, she smelled lovely! As it was August and school holiday time (Zambian time table is similar to ours) Siambango was at home with her family, but in term time she is a boarder at Choongo school.
HHI has helped support Choongo school by refurbishing the dormitory, providing blankets and a solar panel for lighting and also funded a pump for the well which will provide water to the ablutions block. Nzala told Jute that Siambango enjoys school as she is able to tell her family all that she has learnt when she comes home. Not only does Nzala sell tomatoes to earn some income, she recently successfully completed a sewing and tailoring course with HHI and now owns a manual sewing machine. She attends the sewing consortium within the HHI compound, making small items to sell in the UK.
It was a privilege to have an insight to one Zambian family who are being supported in so many ways by HHI, says Jute. Hopefully HHI can provide further help through the play park which is currently being developed and which will allow Siambango to integrate and receive some physiotherapy during the holidays.

Misheke - Compassion in a wheelbarrow A HHI success story - Misheke

Misheke was brought into the HHI Zambia compound in a wheel barrow by a friend. Never having been able to walk, he used his arms to propel himself along unless his friends transported him in a wheel barrow. He has 2 children and supports his family by selling a little in the market. Within 20mins he was given a wheelchair, a good shirt, coat, trousers and a cap and he left the compound clapping his hands and not moving along the floor in the dust for the first time in 41 years.
